14. Spy

Caleb stood at the tunnel entrance, staring out at the lower city. He shook his head.

“Doesn’t look much like the city I recognize.”

Raven saw what he was saying. In place of perpetual twilight, the city streets were awash with luminescent blues and greens, the rotten buildings covered with creeping vines, paved streets layered with moss and glowing mushrooms. Signs of the old city still dominated here and there, stubborn concrete edifices that resisted the new growth, patches of cobblestone poking through the pervasive greenery.

“Thirty years,” the big man mused, “fighting tooth and nail to survive. All that blood and effort...”

He motioned out toward the street.

“Three days and look what they’ve done. All this time we thought we were vying for control of the city, but we were nothing.”

Raven nodded. “Fae magic shit.”

Mia walked up beside the pair, leaning in close to Raven.

“It looks kind of beautiful though, doesn’t it?”

Raven put a hand around the younger woman’s shoulder.

“Yeah, in an end of the world, post-apocalyptic, humans are all dead kind of way.”

Caleb stepped in front of them, handing over a small pack of supplies, his bangles clanking with the movement.

“I can’t be seen to be helping you, little bird. They’ve got me on a tight leash, and I’ve still got my people to consider. But if you find what you’re looking for and it’s enough to bring down the dryads, let me know. Be certain, and I’ll put my weight behind it.”

Raven took the pack, swinging it up across her shoulder as she leaned in and hugged the big man. Caleb returned the gesture uncertainly, taken aback by the sudden show of affection. Mia quickly joined in, moving forward, and insinuating herself between the two others.

Caleb bore their attention with more than a little confusion.

“This is…a little odd,” he offered.

Raven pulled back, slapping the big man on the shoulders.

“We’re not Underwood Kings people any more, Caleb. Just friends, and friends hug so you’d better get used to it.”

He smiled, eyes twinkling beneath heavy brows. He looked down to see that Mia was still clinging to him, tears running down her eyes. Caleb bent down, gently pushing her back so that their eyes were locked. He looked at her questioningly.

“I’m just…” she blurted, “I’m going through some shit right now.”

He nodded. “That you are, little one. I can sense it in you.”

She rubbed the tears from her eyes, stepping back to Raven and staring down at the ground. Caleb shook his head, considering the two women standing before him.

“I’d never thought to see you both again, not like this. After that business with the Infernals, I thought… Well, it is good to see you.”

He moved to continue, but faltered, turning instead, and shaking his head as he walked back into the mouth of the tunnel and the warrens beyond. Raven stood with Mia by her side and Chip hovering nearby. He was looking out at the transformed city, far less clingy than he had been in the weeks leading up to this point.
